Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States, secondary to botulinum toxin. The contemporary hyaluronic acid fillers have expanded from simply filling wrinkles to effectively treating loss of volume as a result of aging.
HA injections replace diminished volume in the subcutaneous tissue beneath the skin by expanding the lines and wrinkles, creating a younger, more refreshed appearance (Cattin, 2010).
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the human body. Its highest concentrations are located in fluids of the eyes and joints. It also works by maintaining volume and elasticity in the skin. This product is very hydrophilic, meaning that it pulls small amounts of water from the body into the area of injection which increases its longevity. Because this substance is found in the body, it metabolizes quickly and carries minimal side effects. There are also no known drug interactions (Vleggaar & Forte, 2006).
